What are the main benefits of apprenticeship for VET learners?

Project Number: 2022-1EL01-KA220-VET-000088384

In this new blog article, we would like to answer one of the first questions to can come to your mind while talking about apprenticeship: why?
Apprenticeship offers a variant to conventional vocational training that combines classes at the educational center with training in companies. The objective is for the student to be able to combine work with theoretical training.

The first and major benefit for the student will be the on the job learning aspect of apprenticeship. During this period, the VET student will encounter real day-to-day problems faced in a company and where they have to put into practice everything learned in the classroom.

Apprenticeship supports transfer of knowledge based on ground needs observed in companies. The practical aspect is a great motivator for students and supports the development of new and adapted skills.

Apprenticeship promotes the European and international mobility of students and the acquisition of foreign languages.

In a context of still high youth unemployment rates, apprenticeship offers great opportunities of placement in the labour market: most companies that have a student who is taking this modality of VET are to incorporate this student into their staff in the future. Thus, a majority of apprenticeship contracts are aimed to become employment contract after the apprenticeship period end.

Finally, let’s note that the benefits are not only for the learners in this system. It also benefit the companies, because they can attract talent and recruit qualified youth to work with them. And it benefits the educational centers, who reinforce their relation with companies and get a better knowledge of the market needs, adapt their offer and become a reference for future VET students.

OECD reports that apprenticeship policies are diverse depending on countries. While in some countries, it is “a well-established route to skilled employment, elsewhere apprenticeship is uncommon with employers favouring other means of labour training and upskilling.” Nowadays in Europe, all countries has implemented apprenticeship programme, using different scheme and implementation methods. Focusing on one of our priorities: rural areas

Project Number: 2022-1EL01-KA220-VET-000088384

One of the Skills4VET-app project’s priorities is to focus on improving the knowledge and competence of staff members and VET trainers and centres located in rural areas, where 3 out of 4 partners are located: Larissa (Greece), Trikala (Greece), Udine (Italy). The project will indirectly benefit the VET learners of those areas, who are considered with fewer opportunities, to improve their employability through apprenticeships.

The Skills4VET-app project will the develop a Digital Report that, aside from helping to identify the knowledge and competences gaps and lay ground for the development of effective, qualitative and needs-oriented education and training results, will focus on the rural areas specific situation.

120 questionnaires and 15 interviews will be conducted in each partners’ country to collect data and analyze them to include them in the Digital Report, which will combine three national reports and useful insights for the development of the “How to App-skill VET trainers” Digital Roadmap: a step-by-step procedure that VET trainers and Centers need to follow, in order to guide, support and motivate VET trainers from the beginning until the evaluation of the apprenticeship.

The Skills4VET-app project has begun!

Skills4VET-app is a 24-month Erasmus+ project aiming to support vocational education and training trainers, as well as vocational education and training centers, to design apprenticeship programmes effectively.

In the framework of the project, research in partner countries on the implementation of apprenticeships will be carried out and will also develop a web-based tool to guide stakeholders to design and implement an apprenticeship.

The project partners from Greece, Spain and Italy organized the kick-off meeting, during which they established the objectives and the foundation for the successful completion of the project.

Essential skills needed for VET trainers to support apprenticeships

Project Number: 2022-1EL01-KA220-VET-000088384

Teachers and trainers are an important part of Vocational Education and Training. Their role is critical to the development of learners’ skills that need to be aligned with the current labour market needs. To do so, VET trainers and teachers should be equipped with the necessary tools to enhance and effectively support VET learners in their apprenticeships, not only by training them in practical occupational skills, but also a soft and socio-emotional skill set.

Regarding the latter, they include intangible personal characteristic traits that describe the way learners interact with others and how they respond to daily working tasks. Some of them can be communication, time management, teamwork, adaptability, autonomy and self-motivation. By enhancing those skills, apprentices are able to work effectively, establish a positive relationship with their co-workers and employers and implement their knowledge adequately. Thus, they are fundamental not only in how they navigate their daily working life, but also in their future professional career.

COVID-19 and the subsequent advancement of distant/hybrid working means have made the need for further development of soft skills more important than ever. In the Skills4VET project we work closely to underline the importance of addressing these needs and offer an insightful and detailed guidance for the skills required in order for learners to effectively complete their apprenticeship.

Introducing Skills4VET-app Erasmus+ project

Project Number: 2022-1EL01-KA220-VET-000088384

In the current rapidly evolving job market, vocational education and training play a crucial role in equipping young people with the essential skills for a successful career path. Addressing this need, the Erasmus+ project Skills4VET-app aims to empower VET trainers and providers to effectively support young learners in their apprenticeships.
Partners from Greece, Spain and Italy will collaborate to develop qualitative tools and resources tailored to the specific needs of VET trainers, providers and centres.

The project’s objectives encompass various areas. Firstly, it aims to equip the VET trainers and centres to support young people regarding apprenticeships. In addition, to strengthen cooperation between VET centres ensuring that apprenticeships align with the labour market’s needs and demands. Furthermore, the project focuses on promoting a sustainable VET sector through digitalization. By achieving those goals, the project aims to enhance the quality and effectiveness of apprenticeships in the VET sector.

Two useful and easy-to-use tools will be developed: The “Skills4vET-app Digital Report” and the “How to App-skill VET trainers Digital Roadmap”.
The first result consists of three national reports from the partners’ countries, that will provide information and data on the field of the current needs of the VET trainers and providers.

These reports will be based on comprehensive research conducted through questionnaires and interviews. The second result will consist of an interactive online platform, in a form of a digital roadmap that will guide the trainers in the process of preparing apprentices throughout their apprenticeship.

For more information and updates on the project, you can visit the project’s website, as well as on the project’s website, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, which will provide you not only with the updates on the project but, also, with information related to the apprenticeships.
